I Wake Up Today...
I wake up today, after our
first strART (street art event) in Mabopane, with the conviction that all the
permission we have needed and we will ever need in life we already have. The need
for affirmation from gatekeepers and those who have money will delay us; they
will delay the coming together and expression of the very dreams that hold us
as prisoners of sleeplessness, restlessness and caffeine and various addictions.
I sadly noted that sometimes
the ones who have resources don’t have projects, and vice-versa. I have also
noted that you yourself are your greatest resource. Use you.
Many a time I find myself
going against the current, and that not being the norm in that particular
stream, it can demotivate and demoralize you. I am favoured in that I find
myself surrounded by great people; great believers, if you may. Many mean well
and a few do well. Many question my sanity and most talk to themselves about my
sanity. It remains to be seen who the sane one is.
Art has made me grow in love
with misfits and the discarded of society for when you sound the call to a gathering
like the one we just had yesterday, these are the ones who answer and pitch
without fail. When they get there, they prefer buying or lifting something so
that they can be part of the procession.
Then you have the goody-two-shoes
ones who’ll invite others and not themselves, text, call wish you all the best
but never really be part of the words they send your way. These very same ones
are the ones who riddle social networks with character-shaping words; they
demand loyalty out something they haven’t invested in; they point to the
misfits as a company not to be kept; they love your body of work publicly but
never buy it; they need to be seen being good to you; they never get past
congratulating or critiquing you; and it’s unlikely that you’ll find them
content with themselves.
I have also sadly learnt that
the measuring of activity/performance is left up to spectators. And I still
hold that the glory of spectators is the satisfaction of partakers.
NOTEWORTHY: Trust “likes” and retweets at your own
peril when it comes to event coordination.
A
business relationship and a friendship are two different ships that may be ferrying
the same people. Sail eyes wide open with your intention hammering against the
currents of waves of fear, loyalty and familiarity. I am still trying to
understand what I just said there…
So, I wake up today because that
is the essential part to achieving any dream.
Love,
MMM
